For almost four decades, the striking Telli buildings have helped shape Aarau's cityscape. Axa now wants to subject its two buildings B and C, with a total of 581 apartments, to a comprehensive energy refurbishment. All facade elements of the building envelope as well as the windows are to be replaced, the roof and ceiling above the first floor are to be newly insulated, and the heat supply is to be converted to sustainably produced district heating, as Axa writes.
In the run-up to the building application, intensive discussions were already held with the city authorities, the City Image Commission, Heritage Protection and the Preservation of Historical Monuments. Axa is aiming for certification according to the Swiss Sustainable Building Standard (SNBS) with the energy refurbishment. The measures in the building area will lead to a reduction of the previous heat consumption by about half, it is said. The buildings are also to be connected to the new IBAarau district heating network.
The refurbishment of the apartments in Building B will not start before summer 2019 and in Building C not before summer 2020. In addition, the modernization of the two underground garages and the ancillary buildings is planned afterwards. According to Axa, the public announcement of the building application will start at the end of October.
