Bern: Groundbreaking ceremony for the major station conversion
Last weekend, the start of construction of the new Bern railroad station was celebrated on the Grosse Schanze. The project partners Canton Bern, City of Bern, Federal Office of Transport, SBB, RBS and BLS invited to the big ground-breaking ceremony.
The new Bern station is scheduled to open in 2025 and, according to SBB, will bring "more space and more capacity". Work on the new RBS station in Bern had already begun at the beginning of July. SBB is building a second underground passage, the "Unterführung Mitte", between the existing station underpass and the "Welle". It is accessible from Bubenbergplatz and Länggasse. This work will officially start in November 2017 on the Grosse Schanze.
The construction costs for the RBS station alone amount to CHF 614 million. Of this, the federal government's share is 450 million and the canton of Berne's 164 million. The SBB project costs a total of 360 million, of which the federal government is financing 121 million and the city and canton of Berne 239 million.
