Zurich: "Paradies" housing estate in Wollishofen renovated

The renovation of the "Paradies" urban housing estate in Zurich-Wollishofen, which was built in the early 1970s, has been completed. Today, just under 160 more people live in the urban housing estate than before the renovation.

The renovation was carried out in five stages with tenancies not under notice of termination. The vacant apartments were publicly advertised and let; a total of just over 2,000 applications were received for 64 advertised apartments. As the city of Zurich writes in its media release, the extensive renovation provided the opportunity to simultaneously combine 26 1.5-room apartments with adjacent 2.5- or 3.5-room apartments. This resulted in 13 apartments each with 4.5 and 5.5 rooms. The number of residents in the housing estate before the renovation was 417, now it is 574.

Various energy-related measures were also implemented, so that the housing estate, which was built between 1970 and 1972, now almost meets the limit value for Minergie new buildings. "The renovation thus makes an important contribution to the sustainability goals of the 2,000-watt society," explained City Councilor André Odermatt, head of the Zurich Department of Building Construction. He added that this was helped by the fact that the buildings were insulated on the outside and that at least 90 percent of the heating requirements are now covered by renewable energy (environmental heat from spring water).

A total of CHF 51 million had been earmarked for the project, of which the Zurich City Council alone approved CHF 45.12 million in its own authority as committed expenditure.
