The municipality of Herzogenbuchsee would like to densify the Bahnhofsquartier Ost and connect it to the buildings that will be built west of the railroad via an underpass. According to the municipal council, the aim is to redesign the station square, improve the traffic situation and, in particular, densify the area in a sensible way.

As there is no concrete planning basis, a master plan is now to be drawn up. The urban planning considerations are to be supplemented there with considerations regarding the outdoor space and traffic. This would also meet the requirements of the monument preservation authorities, which demand an overall concept. Last but not least, a master plan would also help to inform the affected landowners and project authors, says municipal administrator Rolf Habegger.

In Herzogenbuchsee, the master plan is also expected to provide answers to questions about the future design of the actual station area, including the station square, as the SBB will be renovating the station and making it accessible for the disabled in five years' time at the latest. For example, the future bus station will also have to be designed to be handicapped accessible, which is likely to reach its limits at the current location due to lack of space. Accordingly, a relocation of the bus stops must be examined, which in turn depends on the planning of the pedestrian underpass.

The master plan is being drawn up as part of a review process: the municipality and the canton as well as external experts are supporting the draft, with the results being discussed in stages at three workshops.
