Bern: Bümpliz North-West to be developed

The city of Bern wants to develop the Bümpliz Nord-West area in the west of Bern. The first step is to draw up an urban development concept.

Bümpliz North-West is located between the two urban development poles of Brünnen and Ausserholligen and is, in the view of the City of Bern, "a strategically important area with particular potential for upgrading and development". In the 2016 urban development concept (STEK 2016), the area is defined as a so-called Chantier, which is to be restructured and densified.

According to the municipal council, the focus is on upgrading and densifying the center of Bethlehem and the commercial zone of Carlo Bernasconi AG with great potential for conversion and densification. For the surrounding areas, which are also part of the Chantier, the relevant stakeholders have also expressed their intentions for densification and, in some cases, conversion, according to the City of Bern. This will make it possible to coordinate the various projects in cross-area planning, to make the best possible use of the densification potential and at the same time ensure compatibility with the surrounding area.

The first step is to draw up a site-wide urban development concept through a study contract. It should show the desired spatial development and clarify issues such as densification potential, access, open spaces and public spaces as well as infrastructure. Any adjustments to building and zoning regulations must also be examined. The urban development concept should be available in 2019 and define the next planning steps.

Before Christmas, Bern's municipal council approved a loan of CHF 825,000 for the city council to initiate the planning process.
