Basel: Technology park with twice as much space
The Basel Technology Park at Stücki Park has been expanded. Around 3,000 sqm of additional space is to be made available to technology-oriented start-up companies.
With the new space, the Technology Park Basel will be almost twice as large as before. The 3,000 sqm expansion includes twelve biology labs as well as two chemistry labs. There are also 34 offices and additional common areas such as meeting rooms, kitchens or equipment and washrooms. The total area now comprises around 6,400 sqm.
The Technology Park is part of Swiss Prime Site's Stücki Park. In the future, a center for innovation, knowledge, shopping and experience is to be created on the site. The expansion with laboratory and research areas will create space for 1,700 additional jobs by 2023, and the leasable area will be doubled to 60,000 sqm. Four new office and laboratory buildings will extend the existing complex; the first buildings will be ready for occupancy by 2020.
The technology park is aimed at start-up companies from the life sciences industry, the chemical industry, environmental and energy technology, nanotechnology, and information and communication technology. Although the Technology Park is part of Stücki Park, it is not profit-oriented. It is used as an instrument of Basel-Stadt's location promotion.
After 2014, this is already the second time that the technology park is being expanded. Currently, the existing space is almost fully occupied with 23 tenants, the city says. The continuing high demand for laboratory and office space in Basel has led to the Great Council and the Government Council of the Canton of Basel-Stadt agreeing to another expansion, it says.
