Bern: Wifag site is to become a housing estate
According to a media report, a housing estate is to be built on the site of the former Wifag machine factory in the Breitenrain district.
The three-hectare Wifag site between Scheibenstrasse and Wylergut was shut down almost eight years ago, and since then there have been interim uses there. As The Covenant reports, the landowner Mali International wants to develop the site. However, it is currently still "a vision" of the Bern-based real estate company, the report says.
One-third of the apartments on the Wifag site are to be offered for rent, one-third for ownership and one-third as low-cost apartments. Intergenerational housing, student housing and housing for people with disabilities are also planned. Commercial uses are planned for the first floors of the new buildings, and a new use is being examined for the linen weaving mill building on the site.
Like The Covenant writes, an approved construction project is not expected until spring 2022 at the earliest, and the rezoning of the Wifag site would also have to go before the people.
