From the middle of next year, a new urban quarter with over 500 apartments and areas for neighborhood uses and small businesses is to be built on the Westfeld (formerly Felix-Platter-Areal). The developer and builder is the building cooperative wohnen&mehr.

A central component of the development is the conversion of the hospital building into a residential building. According to the project proposal of the consortium Müller Sigrist Architekten and Rapp Architekten, the delicate, external appearance of the building is to be completely preserved. On the upper floors, 130 compactly cut apartments will be created, offering a wide range: Budget and maisonette apartments, new living forms to joker and guest rooms are planned. A cascading staircase leads from the first floor to the roof, connecting the residential floors and designed to encourage interaction among residents.

The centerpiece of the converted hospital building is a two-story foyer. From there, the public uses on the first floor are accessed via an inner alley, for example childcare services, a neighborhood store, meeting spaces for the neighborhood and a café. At the same time, the foyer connects the future neighborhood square on Westfeld with Hegenheimerstrasse and creates a generous public crossing.

The building cooperative wohnen&mehr will take over the hospital building after the new Felix Platter Hospital goes into operation in the summer of 2019. Deconstruction work inside the building is then to begin immediately; occupation is planned for 2022.
