Basel: The Rosental site is to become a business location
According to the government council's plans, the Rosental site in Basel is to become a location for "high value-added" industries. A development plan is now being prepared for this purpose.
The canton of Basel-Stadt acquired the approximately 4,700-square-meter Rosental site between the exhibition grounds and the Badischer Bahnhof train station in 2016, it was the largest real estate deal in the history of the canton at the time. Now, the government council announced that the former industrial site is to become a business location where, for example, the headquarters of internationally active companies, high-quality business services or even research uses will be located. This new positioning is intended to reduce noise emissions for the neighboring residential population.
The plan is for a high degree of densification and development in stages. The aim is to exploit the potential for additional usable space, according to the government council. The area, which is currently closed, is to be opened up in stages, and residential uses and services are also to be accommodated there.
The foundations for an urban development model for the site are currently being drawn up, and from the summer onwards the first development plan will be prepared and measures taken to make the site ready for future uses. This will involve the demolition of individual buildings for a period of at least three years. At the same time, talks are being held with companies that want to move to the site.
