Zurich: Foundation stone laid for Hornbach housing development

On July 6, the foundation stone was laid for the new Hornbach housing estate in Zurich's Seefeld district. Housing, childcare facilities, commercial space and a work yard for Grün Stadt Zürich are being built.

The new Hornbach development in Zurich-Riesbach, in the immediate vicinity of the lake, will comprise 125 non-profit apartments, mainly for families.

The project, which is now being realized, was designed by Knapkiewicz & Fickert Architekten from Zurich and is the result of an architectural competition that was decided back in 2012. Over 70 percent of the apartments are intended for tenants with children; the daycare center offers space for 24 children and the after-school care center can accommodate up to 75 children. According to the City of Zurich, the entire Hornbach development will be built in accordance with the requirements of the canton of Zurich's cantonal housing promotion scheme and to the Minergie-P-Eco standard.

The press release goes on to say that the development will make an important contribution to social diversity in Seefeld. "Until now, the proportion of non-profit apartments in District 8 has been well below average," said City Councillor Daniel Leupi, Head of the Department of Finance, at the foundation stone ceremony. "The Hornbach development will finally create more affordable apartments, especially for families, and space for businesses."

In 2015, Zurich voters approved the CHF 100.7 million project loan for the construction of the Hornbach housing estate with a majority of just under 66%. Due to appeals, planning was halted in the meantime. However, work was then able to begin in September 2017. The development should be ready for occupancy by 2021.
