Background of the  The construction project is based on the model lake basin of the city and canton of Zurich. The aim is to relocate boat moorings from the lake basin to a new harbor in order to defuse conflicts of use. In addition, a place with a harbor atmosphere is to be created in Tiefenbrunnen, which will not only improve the infrastructure for sailing in Zurich, but also bring added value to the general public.

Last summer, the city of Zurich therefore founded the Einfache Gesellschaft Marina Tiefenbrunnen (EGMT) with the Zurich Sailing Club, the Zurich Yacht Club and the Enge Sailing Club as well as the KIBAG Group and the insurance company Die Mobiliar. The City of Zurich's Office for Buildings conducted the project competition on behalf of this sponsorship body.
Proposals were sought for the design of the landside area of Tiefenbrunnen Marina with a water sports center and a public restaurant as well as a spacious, wide public pier with a café. Attention was paid to economically exemplary and ecologically sustainable projects.

The jury voted unanimously in favor of the project by the Zurich teams Waldrap and Pechmann Landschaftsarchitekten

Overall, the winning project provides a clear and simple answer to the competition brief, according to a joint statement from the City of Zurich and EGMT: the positioning of the building on the edge of the plot allows maximum use of the drying area for sailing. Nevertheless, the public character of the facility is clearly expressed. The project is also very consistent with the planned future upgrading of the area by extending the current park to the marina.

Based on the results of the competition, a spatial planning procedure will now be carried out, during which a design plan will also be drawn up. The city council then intends to submit the design plan, the city's participation in the sponsorship and the building lease agreement for Tiefenbrunnen Marina to Zurich City Council for discussion and a decision. The consultation in parliament is expected to take place in 2020.
