Basel: SBB starts demolition work on Lysbüchel site

In August, SBB plans to start preparatory work for the remediation of contaminated sites and the demolition of existing buildings on construction site 1 of the Lysbüchel site in Basel.

The VoltaNord commercial and industrial site, also known as the Lysbüchel site, is to be redeveloped. Up to 2,700 jobs and housing for up to 1,400 residents are to be created. The Grand Council of the Canton of Basel-Stadt approved the corresponding development plan in May, but the Basel Trade Association has lodged a referendum against it.

Irrespective of this, construction area 1 on the Volta North site is defined as industrial and commercial zone 7 and is therefore still suitable for commercial use, SBB says. For this reason, the railroad company wants to start preparatory work there and also make the current track areas usable. The freed-up areas will provide additional space for dense commercial uses.

On the entire Volta North site, the currently underused industrial and freight area is to be developed into an urban quarter. Areas that are little used today will be densified, and new residential space will also be created.
