Construction of the new Kunsthaus began on August 3, 2015, and just under three years later the shell of the building has been completed. According to the client - the City of Zurich, the Zürcher Kunstgesellschaft and the Stiftung Zürcher Kunsthaus, united in the Einfache Gesellschaft Kunsthaus-Erweiterung (EGKE) - construction is progressing according to plan. According to the current status of the project, the credit of CHF 206 million is being adhered to and the private share of over CHF 80 million has also been secured. Completion planned for 2020 will take place on schedule.

The New Kunsthaus is also forward-looking in terms of the 2,000-watt society, according to a press release. The total energy requirement for building operation (heating, cooling, electricity), building materials (grey energy) and mobility is to be significantly reduced compared to existing museums with ecologically sustainable solutions - among other things, recycled concrete will be used, which accounts for around 95 percent of the total amount of concrete used.
