Bern: Interim use for Schützenmatte

The Schützenmatte in Bern, until now mainly a parking lot, will be used for three years for cultural uses and temporary projects. Afterwards, the area is to be redesigned and put to a new use.

By mid-July 2018, 142 passenger car parking spaces had been eliminated and car, cab and commercial parking spaces rearranged on Bern's Schützenmatte, and the redesigned square was officially handed over to the public at the beginning of August.

In the next three years, two-thirds of the square will thus be available for cultural uses. The remaining area will be available as a parking lot for vehicles of craftsmen and market people as well as for touring cars and cabs.

According to the City of Bern, the Schützenmatte is to become a meeting and exercise area for young and old. For this purpose, various temporary elements are available that can be used flexibly and moved around: Trees in troughs that can also be used as seating, and barrier elements that not only prevent illegal parking but are also suitable for skating and jumping. The findings from the three-year test operation will later be incorporated into the final redesign of the square.
