Basel: Study contract for residential project Am Walkeweg decided

The six-hectare Am Walkeweg site in Basel is currently used primarily for leisure gardens; in the future, around 650 people are to live here. The results of a two-stage urban planning study for the site have now been presented.

The design by architects Camponovo Baumgartner is to serve as the basis for the development plan, according to the canton of Basel-Stadt. The concept is based on well-known historical Basel settlement typologies and envisages a diverse residential landscape for various stakeholders, according to a statement by the canton. Housing for around 650 residents is planned, as well as a new elementary school, kindergartens and commercial areas serving the neighborhood.

The Am Walkeweg site is located directly at the Dreispitz S-Bahn stop, is very well connected and nearby are, among others, the Brüglingen Botanical Garden and the Wolfgottesacker. The site is owned by the Canton of Basel-Stadt and will be available for new uses from 2021.

The next step is for the second-stage development plan to be approved by the government council next year. After the remediation of the contaminated site, construction work on the site is expected to begin in 2022. (ah)
