Zurich: Green light for Ensemble stadium project

Zurich's voters have said yes to the new stadium on the Hardturm site. This means that the ensemble project by HRS Real Estate, Credit Suisse and the Allgemeine Baugenossenschaft Zürich (ABZ) can be realized.

The Ensemble project envisages the construction of a soccer stadium as well as 174 non-profit and 600 private apartments on the 55,000 sqm Hardturm site. According to earlier information, the total investment for the non-profit housing construction, the soccer stadium and two high-rise residential buildings amounts to around CHF 570 million.

On November 25, the electorate in Zurich approved the corresponding bill with 53.8 percent of votes in favor. The turnout was just under 56 percent. Specifically, it was about the granting of building rights for the realization of the football stadium, non-profit housing and two high-rise buildings on the Hardturm site, the transfer of two plots of land to administrative assets, a property loan of around CHF 50 million and a revenue waiver of around 1.7 million per year.

Zurich's Social Democrats had vehemently opposed the project, fearing that too little non-profit housing would be created. According to the SRF Regional Journal opponents of the stadium from Höngg have already announced objections. They object to the two high-rise buildings, which would not fit into the cityscape. They want to continue to fight against these towers - before the administrative court and possibly also before the federal court, reports the SRF Regional Journal. (ah)
