More residential space is being created in Basel than at any time in years

More than twice as many new apartments were built in the canton of Basel-Stadt in 2018 than in 2017. Overall, the canton recorded the highest new construction output in 37 years.

In 2018, 807 new apartments were built in Basel, compared to 369 in the previous year, which is less than half the number. This is according to the residential construction statistics from the Statistical Office. Overall, more residential space was built than at any time in decades.

According to the presidential department, five large developments with more than 50 units each contributed significantly to the good result in 2018: Magnolienpark, Rosentalstrasse, Belforterstrasse, Schoren and Maiengasse, with the latter three being the canton's own investments or building rights. These developments account for more than half (57%) of all new apartments, it continues. According to the information, around 1,400 apartments are currently under construction, with over 550 further units also approved.

Two thirds of the new-build apartments were built in Grossbasel, 29% in Kleinbasel and 4% in Riehen and Bettingen, the report continues. 36% of the new-build apartments had three rooms. Two-bedroom apartments accounted for 26% and four-bedroom apartments for 25%. The average living space of the newly built units is 90 square meters.

According to the press release, the client for 30% of the new-build apartments in 2018 was a company from the real estate sector. 21% were commissioned by a housing association and 20% by an insurance company. (ah)
