Starting signal for third stage of Uptown Mels
In Mels (SG), the conversion of the Stoffel site is making progress. The first two stages are under construction, and now the third stage has also begun: The conversion of the former spinning mill.
Two years ago, construction work began on the site of the former Stoffel textile factory in Mels (SG), Work is now in full swing on three construction stages of the major Uptown Mels project. The shell of the weaving mill is almost complete, and the first residents are expected to move into the factory lofts in the building in September.
The groundbreaking ceremony for the Neue Öffnerei took place in summer 2018, and this building will be ready for occupancy next year. Where once stood a large warehouse, an L-shaped building with rental apartments is being built under the auspices of the Thurgau Pension Fund.
The conversion of the former spinning mill, a striking 19th century factory building, has now also begun. Sixty apartments are being built in the new spinning mill and the passerelle to the weaving mill; the floor with the high vaulted ceilings is being converted into studios and commercial space, as was the case in the weaving mill. In the coming months, the inclined elevator connecting Uptown Mels with the village will also be installed. The factory pool with swimming pond and sauna is also scheduled for completion this year.
As David Trümpler, managing director of Alte Textilfabrik Stoffel AG, says, "a considerable number of the apartments in the first stage" had already been sold before completion of the shell. (ah)
