Altdorf: Start of construction for railway station development
Construction of the new cantonal railway station has begun in Altdorf. The canton of Uri, the municipality of Altdorf, the SBB and the Urner Kantonalbank are jointly investing over CHF 100 million.
The new cantonal railway station is scheduled to start operations at the end of 2021 and will then become the central hub of public transport on the Gotthard. In the future, Intercity trains traveling through the Gotthard Base Tunnel will also stop in Altdorf, as will an increasing number of long-distance and regional trains. According to SBB, around 90 train stops are planned every day.
At the same time, the canton of Uri is expanding the bus network and building new bus yards on the east and west sides of the station with a total of eight bus stops.
The Cantonal Bank of Uri is constructing a service building at Bahnhofplatz 1. UKB will locate its headquarters on one third of the space, while the remaining two thirds will be rented out.
The cantonal railway station is considered a key project for the coordinated development of settlements and transport in the valley floor of Uri. (ah)
