The 1,000+ housing program drawn up by Immobilien Basel-Stadt envisages the construction of more than 1,000 new apartments by 2035 as the canton's own investment. The units are to be rented out at affordable rents.

With the housing construction program, the canton is implementing the constitutional initiative "Right to Housing". The new construction measures will increase the portfolio in the financial assets to around 3,000 apartments, the government council says. In addition, there will be 700 building lease contracts and several commercial sites.

The additional apartments will contribute to easing the situation on the Basel housing market, the government council is convinced. The demand for apartments in Basel is constantly higher than the supply. Currently, the apartment vacancy rate is 1.0%, and the population is expected to grow. In the past ten years, around 20,000 jobs have been created, but only 3,000 additional apartments, the government council's statement continues. (ah)
