In the north of Basel, on the former Ciba plant sites in Klybeck and the harbor sites at Klybeckquai and Westquai, a total of 50 hectares will become available for new urban districts. Living and working space for a total of more than 20,000 people could be created, according to the city of Basel.

It is also planned to connect the areas with the Klybeck S-Bahn stop to the S-Bahn heart. New bridges are also to be built to strengthen the network with the French and German neighbors.

Structure plan to coordinate transformation

In order to coordinate this transformation, an urban district guideline plan is to be drawn up for the Kleinhüningen and Klybeck quarters, which in particular sets out the spatial development strategy for the quarters. The urban district guideline plan, analogous to the cantonal guideline plan, will be established by the cantonal government in a way that is binding on the authorities.

In a press release, the Basel government emphasizes that the neighborhood population, property owners, companies, organizations and all interested citizens can participate in the structure plan. For the development, in particular for the necessary basis, the government council proposes to the Grand Council expenditures in the amount of about 5.8 million CHF.

Living on Klybeckquai

An urban development concept has already been drawn up as the basis for further planning on Klybeckquai and Westquai. While residential uses are planned for Klybeckquai, space for culture, work and leisure is to be created on Westquai.

In the socially and functionally mixed quarters, there would be space for more than 8,000 residents and employees, according to the government council's statement. The existing Klybeck quarter would be connected to the banks of the Rhine via new green spaces and extended neighborhood streets. (ah)
