Geneva: Spatial planning project fails at the ballot box
Defeat for a Geneva urban development project: plans for a new district near the airport failed to win a majority in the vote on 9 February.
With the "Meyrin - Cointrin Est et Ouest" development project, the Geneva government wanted to create space for new residential areas on a total of 25.5 hectares in the municipalities of Meyrin and Vernier. In the long term, around 800 jobs, 2,300 residential units and public facilities were to be created. Among other things, the current villa zone was to be expanded.
Around a dozen associations had opposed these plans with two referendums. In the vote of 9 February 2020, voters rejected the rezoning of Cointrin East in Meyrin with 55.71% no votes, while the rezoning of Cointrin West between Meyrin and Vernier failed with a no share of 55.32%. (ah)
