Lucerne: Left bank of the lake to be developed
By the end of 2020, the city of Lucerne is working on a development concept to upgrade the left bank of the lake. In this context, there is now a proposal to increase the density of the bus depot.

Triggered by the popular initiative "Lebendiges Inseli statt Blechlawine" and the motion 435 "Linkes Seeufer: Von der Schmuddelecke zur Uferpromenade", the city of Lucerne wants to develop the lakeshore in its entirety. The various subspaces are to be analyzed in terms of use, design and their interplay, coordinated with each other and linked with the other parts of the city through attractive connections.
As part of a test planning process, three interdisciplinary planning teams will be working out ideas by the summer that can be implemented by 2035. In this first step, the focus is on the open space and its networking with the adjacent neighborhood and the station area. The test planning is to form the basis for a development concept from which concrete projects can emerge.
The bus depot of the Lucerne Transport Authority (VBL) in the Tribschen district is also located in the perimeter under consideration. According to a report from centralplus the Green Liberals (GLP) demand that a long-term perspective is also developed for this 22,000 sqm site. They say the area is currently underutilized, also against the backdrop of the increasingly dense neighborhood with a lot of residential and job potential. "We see far greater urban development opportunities on the VBL site, which can be used under building law until 2050," says the GLP parliamentary group in justifying its postulate. The city council should present concrete considerations for the further development of the VBL site and make proposals for the creation of non-profit housing and affordable commercial space, the newspaper report continues.
