Ceneri Base Tunnel back in test operation
AlpTransit Gotthard Ltd has resumed test runs in the Ceneri Base Tunnel. At the end of April 2020, based on the current status of test operations, an assessment will be made as to when the tunnel can be opened.

Test runs have been taking place again in the Ceneri Base Tunnel since Monday, April 20, 2020. According to ATG AlpTransit Gotthard Ltd, the conditions for this were defined in close exchange between medical specialists from the Federal Office of Public Health (FOPH) and the SBB; the specifications of the FOPH would be strictly adhered to. The situation is continuously assessed and the test operation is adapted to the circumstances; ATG has appointed a safety officer for each test shift to ensure compliance with the specifications of the FOPH and the protective measures.
On April 6, 2020, ATG resumed the necessary maintenance activities (upkeep and repair) in the Ceneri Base Tunnel in accordance with the authorization of the Canton of Ticino. Prior to this, all processes, instruction regulations and control measures were reviewed together with the contractors involved, the cantonal authorities, SUVA and the trade unions. This had shown that the official behavioral and hygiene regulations could be complied with during the work.
At the end of April 2020, based on the situation and the current status of the test operation, AlpTransit Gotthard Ltd. together with the FOT and SBB will assess what effects are to be expected on the further course of commissioning of the Ceneri Base Tunnel and its planned opening in September and December 2020, respectively.
