Basel: 200 cooperative apartments on the Lysbüchel site
Cooperative apartments are to be built on construction site 4 of the Lysbüchel site (VoltaNord). A corresponding declaration of intent was concluded between the canton and the regional association of housing cooperatives in northwestern Switzerland.
Building site 4 of the Lysbüchel site, which is directly adjacent to the residential area of the St. Johann neighborhood, covers an area of around 7,400 square meters and has a potential of around 200 apartments. It is owned by the canton and is to be given in building rights to several housing cooperatives yet to be determined. When selecting the building leaseholders, the regional association is to ensure that all apartments realized there are reasonably priced.
This project will further increase the stock of cooperative apartments in the canton of Basel-Stadt, the government council said in a statement. There are currently 4,100 cooperative apartments in Basel on cantonal soil, and around 1,200 more are to be added in the coming years.
In addition to the apartments on site 4, a primary school building and the Elsässerstrasse cultural and commercial center are planned for sites 3 and 5, which also belong to the canton. The Lysbüchel site is a currently underused industrial and freight area that is to be developed into an urban quarter. Areas that are little used today are to be densified and additional residential space is to be created. (ah)
