Zurich: BiG plans renovation and new building in Wiedikon
The Baugenossenschaft im Gut (BiG) wants to increase the density of its housing estate along Gutstrasse in Zurich-Wiedikon. Around 650 to 750 new affordable apartments are to be built; there are currently 300 units there.
The Baugenossenschaft im Gut (BiG) has been given the green light for a major project. It wants to renovate a large part of its buildings on Gutstrasse in Zurich-Wiedikon and at the same time create additional affordable housing. The city council has approved the "Gutstrasse Master Plan, Baugenossenschaft im Gut".
According to the Department of Buildings, around 650 to 750 affordable non-profit apartments are planned to replace the existing 300 or so apartments between Gutstrasse and the Sihlfeld cemetery. This will more than double the number of apartments in the development, and should also improve the quality and energy standards of the housing. The master plan will also create large and high-quality open spaces.
The cooperative housing estate "Im Gut" dates back to the early 1950s, it was created by the architects Karl Egender and Wilhelm Josef Müller. It includes residential buildings, a kindergarten and a cooperative pub, as well as a former store, which is now used as a bistro. A high-rise building belonging to the settlement, the kindergarten and the cooperative pub are in the municipal inventory of art and cultural-historical protected objects. In order to implement the master plan, the kindergarten and the cooperative building must be removed from the municipal inventory, while the former store, which is classified as worthy of protection, is to be added to the inventory. These adjustments have already been decided by the city council.
The master plan will now be presented to the general assembly of the building cooperative in the estate, which will vote on the realization. The implementation of the individual construction stages is to take place over a longer period of time and in a staggered manner. The competition for the first stage is currently out to tender. (ah)
