Basel: Habitat Foundation wants to stock up Coop wine warehouse

The former Coop wine warehouse at Elsässerstrasse 201 is the largest building on Lysbüchel South. The building from the 1950s is to be converted into a residential building with 65 apartments for over 150 people according to plans by Esch Sintzel Architekten from Zurich.

As the Habitat foundation as the building owner states on its website about the project, a large number of apartments of different sizes will be built in the Weinlager, so that people of all ages and in all life situations can move in. The energy reference area per person will be limited to 45 sqm, and the house will be built free of obstacles. In addition to the apartments, commercial space, such as a café, is planned for the ground floor. A parking garage for bicycles and cars will be built in the basement.

How the Basel newspaper citing the building application, which is still open until May 29, the project is expected to cost CHF 26.5 million. According to the report, the new residential building will have five full floors and two attic floors, and the apartments will have 2.5 to 7.5 rooms.

According to the newspaper report, a building application has also been published for the adjacent site at Beckenweg 11. Here, the Wohnstadt Bau- und Verwaltungsgesellschaft cooperative wants to build a five-storey residential building, which is to become part of a courtyard perimeter development. The plan is to build 30 small apartments, mainly for single households. The construction costs amount to 7.8 million.

The Habitat Foundation acquired the 12,400 sqm Lysbüchel Süd site from Coop in 2013. It was divided into 15 plots, twelve of which the foundation is giving away in building rights. The foundation is pursuing three projects itself: The conversion of the former wine warehouse, the construction of a new residential building on the corner plot at the far north of Lothringerstrasse, and a residential building for musicians at the corner of Lothringerstrasse and Beckenstrasse.
