In September, the opening of the Ceneri Base Tunnel (CBT) and the completion of the New Rail Link through the Alps (NRLA) were originally to be celebrated with several events. However, these will be significantly smaller due to the Corona pandemic. However, the commissioning of the Ceneri Base Tunnel is still scheduled for December 2020.

As planned, the Ceneri Base Tunnel is to be handed over from the constructor ATG to SBB as the future operator on September 4, 2020. According to a statement by the Federal Council, an opening ceremony will take place, but without the 650 guests originally planned. The start of operations is still planned for the timetable change in mid-December 2020. Currently, it is being clarified which offers can be run concretely. Priority is being given to freight transport so that the benefits of the NRLA as a flat railroad can be realized as quickly as possible.

With the completion of the NRLA, more freight trains can run over the Gotthard axis, and travel times between north and south will be shortened. Ticino will also receive a commuter railroad. (ah)
