As Bern's Mayor Alec von Graffenried and Councillor Michael Aebersold explained, the master plan is to be the guiding document for the realization of the new urban quarter. They said they had a "unique opportunity to create an urban quarter with a pioneering character". Viererfeld/Mittelfeld should be groundbreaking in terms of ecological standards, diverse and mixed housing construction, and forward-looking mobility.

"With the master plan, we have reached an important milestone on the way to our new urban quarter," says Alec von Graffenried. The new quarter will consist of different, but matching houses. The plan is to create a home for people with diverse lifestyles and circumstances.

According to the master plan, the "umbilical cord" of the quadrangle should form a central main axis along which all the
important public spaces and public-oriented uses are located here. A second important connection will lead from Länggassquartier via Mittelfeld to the new district park with Allmend, sports areas and garden land. Together with the Mittelfeldpark and the historic Studersteinpark and Engepromenade parks, as well as the Kleine Bremgartenwald, a generous
and diverse range of open spaces, the Bern City Council informs.

Start of construction possible in 2024

According to the municipal council, the next step will be to draw up legally binding plans; among other things, the zoning plan and the urban development guidelines will have to be adapted and a detailed development plan drawn up. At the same time, a credit bill for the project planning and realization of the infrastructures such as the park, roads, squares and subsoil as well as the building lease is being prepared. This is expected to be put to the vote in spring 2021.

"If all goes well, we will be able to start the first stage of realization and the construction of about 300 to 400 of the total of about 1,100 apartments in 2024," said local councilor Michael Aebersold
out. At least half of the living space would be reserved for non-profit housing. (ah)
