Zurich: New replacement building for housing estate in Seebach

The Schönau Zurich building cooperative wants to replace its Schönauring estate in the inner ring of the garden city in Zurich-Seebach with new buildings. Kuoni Mueller & Partner has been commissioned with the development.

The study competition for the building project at Schönauring was won by the Zurich architectural firm Andri Cajos. The proposal envisages an ensemble of four to five-storey buildings grouped around a green area. The point buildings at the edge of the development have an amorphous basic form, which is why the 2- to 5.5-room apartments have a two- to three-sided orientation. In the middle, an open area remains, which is used as an adventure and outdoor space. A total of 90 apartments and three kindergartens are being built.

The project is now being further elaborated; according to Kuoni Mueller & Partner, there are still questions to be answered with regard to materials, construction and sustainability. Construction is scheduled to start at the end of 2021, and the settlement should be ready for occupancy from winter 2022/23.

The developer, Baugenossenschaft Schönau Zürich, owns three housing estates with around 324 apartments in the northern part of the Zurich-Seebach urban area. The Schönauring estate dates from 1947/48 and is the cooperative's oldest and largest estate, with originally 142 residential units and 48 terraced single-family houses. The renewal of the estate has been planned since 2009. Initially, the buildings to the north of the ring have been replaced by new buildings. The second phase will now follow with the redevelopment of the core of the estate in the inner ring. (ah)
