Winterthur: SBB to build new logistics centre
Directly next to Winterthur station, a new SBB logistics centre and a covered bicycle parking facility have been under construction since 3 August 2020.
On the current Esse site, a building is being constructed for the logistics of Winterthur station with a bicycle parking facility on the upper floor. According to SBB, the background to the construction measures is that the expansion of services at the station also requires a new solution for supply and disposal. The expansion of the north pedestrian underpass with the shops necessitates a delivery system that does not disturb the pedestrian zones with noise and disruptions. Furthermore, additional bicycle parking spaces were urgently needed at the station.
Demolition, excavation and civil engineering work should be completed by the end of 2020. The logistics centre and bicycle parking are scheduled to be completed and put into operation with the opening of the north pedestrian underpass at the end of 2021.
According to SBB, the total costs amount to around CHF 12.7 million. The city of Winterthur is assuming the share for the bicycle parking and a pedestrian and cycle path across the site - around CHF 2.5 million. (ah)
