Biel/Nidau: Corona delays Agglolac votes

Originally, voters in Biel and Nidau were supposed to vote on the controversial Agglolac project in early summer 2020. Due to the Covid 19 pandemic, the referendums have now been postponed.

Although there are still uncertainties regarding the development of the Corona pandemic, the cities of Biel and Nidau say they want to enable a decision on Agglolac by next year at the latest.

The large-scale project, the urban expansion to the lake planned for years by Nidau and Biel and the real estate company Mobimo, is thus delayed once again. A new neighborhood for 1,500 residents is to be built on the former Expo site, between Lake Biel Bay and Nidau Castle. After strong opposition from the population - among others against a high-rise building - the plans were revised.

After the long interruption, the information concept and the business itself must now be adapted, according to Biel and Nidau. This involves minor changes to the building code of the city of Nidau in the Agglolac area, which will be made public in 2019. These changes are now to be made before the referendum.

The public display of the relevant documents in Nidau took place in June and July without any objections being received. By the end of October at the latest, the municipal councils of Nidau and Biel intend to adopt the updated project for the attention of their city councils and subsequently inform the public.
