Next year the World Economic Forum WEF will not take place in Davos as usual, but on the Bürgenstock.

According to the World Economic Forum (WEF), it will hold its annual meeting in 2021 from 18 to 21 May on the Bürgenstock. The annual meeting scheduled for spring this year in Davos had to be cancelled due to the Corona crisis.

The Canton of Lucerne welcomed the decision. The relocation of the WEF to Central Switzerland is seen as a "welcome opportunity for the tourism destination of Lucerne-Bürgenstock-Nidwalden", according to a statement by the cantonal government.

According to government president Reto Wyss, the congress and event sector, which has been particularly hard hit by the Corona pandemic, will benefit directly from the event. Since the WEF's guest segment is in the upscale segment, the event is also in line with the goal of further developing Lucerne's tourism in terms of quality. Last but not least, the WEF is an "event in the spotlight of the international media". This reputational effect is "priceless, not only for upscale tourism, but for the entire destination", says Wyss.

The canton of Nidwalden also sees an opportunity for the tourism region in this major event. They are "convinced that the recently expanded Bürgenstock Resort with its modern infrastructure is ideally suited for an international event of this magnitude," said Othmar Filliger, the cantonal mayor and economic director. Robert P. Herr, General Manager of the Bürgenstock Resort, described the annual meeting as an "accolade".

The theme of the WEF meeting will be "The Great Reset". Solutions will be sought to address the world's most pressing challenges. Ways are to be found to shape the time after the Corona pandemic and to build a more solidary and sustainable society, according to the WEF. In 2022, the annual meeting is to be held in Davos again.
