Basel and Weil am Rhein plan joint district

Basel wants to create a new urban quarter together with its German neighbour Weil am Rhein. The final stage of development could provide living space for up to 2,200 people.

The planning area is around ten hectares in size and is located to the south of the Otterbach district of Weil, directly on the border between Germany and Switzerland. It is largely owned by the municipality of Basel, while the planning sovereignty and thus the urban planning definition of the use lie with the city of Weil am Rhein. The site is currently designated as a commercial area, but Basel and Weil want to convert the site into a residential quarter in which minor commercial uses, so-called non-disruptive commercial enterprises, are also allowed to be located.

Immobilien Basel-Stadt held a competition for the site development, in which the work of Hosoya Schaefer Architects with Agence Ter.de Landschaftsarchitekten and pool Architekten with Maurus Schifferli Landschaftsarchitekten won awards and were selected for further work. In the final stage of development, the two concepts can accommodate between approximately 1,500 and 2,264 people.

Now the municipal council of the city of Weil am Rhein will deal with the two concepts. In order to be able to realise the project, the land use plan (roughly equivalent to the cantonal structure plan) must be amended and a development plan drawn up. The development concept is designed for a period of eight to ten years. (ah)
