Zermatt: The Ritz-Carlton plans luxury resort
The first Ritz-Carlton brand hotel in a European ski resort is to open in Zermatt.
A The Ritz-Carlton hotel is to open in Zermatt (VS) in 2026. According to a media release from Marriott International, the parent company of The Ritz-Carlton, the planned luxury resort will be the brand's second hotel in Switzerland after The Ritz-Carlton Geneva in Geneva, and will also be The Ritz-Carlton's first ski resort in Europe.
The owner of the hotel, Zermatt hotelier Mario Julen, has signed a management contract with Marriott International, the statement said. Among other things, Julen is active as a hotelier; with his Matterhorn Peak AG, he is also developing regional real estate projects such as "7 heavens," the "Hotel Mama" managed by his daughter, and now "The Ritz-Carlton Zermatt," which is to be designed by Paris-based architecture firm AW2.
When completed, the new resort will have 69 rooms and suites, two restaurants and bars with views of the Matterhorn, and a "luxurious spa" with indoor and outdoor pools and a fitness room. Plans also call for a large outdoor terrace as well as a private dining room and direct access to the slopes via "ski-in/ski-out" chalets. (bw)
