The Meienegg family housing estate in the Stöckacker quarter in Bern's VI district was built between 1949 and 1955 and is now in need of considerable renovation. Since both the building standards and the apartment sizes are no longer up to date, Fambau wants to build a new housing development to replace the existing one.

The Meie project by Huggenbergerfries Architekten from Zurich won the project competition held by the cooperative with the city of Bern. The jury praised the "great socio-spatial quality of a contemporary, forward-looking and architecturally very good overall development in this location.

The design picks up "the tradition of cooperative and urban living with the lightly tinted motif of the residential courtyard." In this way, a new part of the neighborhood is created with added value for the residents and the surrounding neighborhoods. In addition, the winning project allows for a good and socially compatible phasing with functioning intermediate states. Plans call for 430 apartments of various sizes and types.

The Meie project is now being further developed and will form the basis for the zoning ordinance. It will be drawn up in the course of this year and then submitted to the voters of Bern. (ah)
