St.Gallen: New campus for the HSG
The canton of St.Gallen wants to create urgently needed additional space for the University of St.Gallen. The architectural competition for the new HSG campus was won by Zurich architect Pascal Flammer.
Following the conclusion of the architectural competition, the canton is now working on the concrete construction project in a next step. According to the canton, the approval procedure with the special use plan is scheduled to start in 2023; construction is expected to begin in 2025 and the campus will be commissioned in 2029.
The winning project "Haus im Park" by Zurich architect Pascal Flammer envisages a six-storey building with around 31,000 square metres of floor space on the Platztor site in St. Gallen. The upper floors are reserved for teaching and research; public-oriented uses such as the cafeteria are to be oriented towards the city centre. An auditorium designed for 400 people is planned for the two basement floors. A spacious park is to be created around the building, which, like the building itself, will be open to the public and create a transition to the neighbouring quarter and St. Jakob-Strasse as an important traffic axis. According to a media release from the canton, the new campus will significantly enhance the area compared to the current situation.
The cantonal population already approved the construction loan of CHF 160 million in 2019. The total costs are estimated at CHF 207 million; in addition to the canton, they will be borne by the federal government (CHF 25 million) and the University of St.Gallen (CHF 20 million). The City of St.Gallen will contribute CHF 2 million to the sale of the Platztor site. (bw)
