Basel: Population grows due to new arrivals
The population of Basel-Stadt grew by almost 1,000 people last year. Due to the Corona pandemic, there were fewer people moving in, but also fewer moving out.
According to the canton of Basel-Stadt, 13,480 people moved to the city in 2020, while 12,524 people left. The migration balance of 956 came about due to inflows from abroad, the canton reports.
Basel's Cantonal and Urban Development Department sees the figures as proof of the attractiveness and dynamism of the location. The fact that Basel remains attractive for immigration even in times of the Corona pandemic is a direct consequence of the pull of the labour market, which attracts numerous skilled workers and their families from abroad.
From the perspective of cantonal and urban development, there is a continuing high demand for housing despite slightly rising vacancy figures. A central task is to further develop the housing supply in the canton, especially on the transformation sites. In 2020, the number of apartments had been expanded by 672 units. (ah)
