Bern: Burgernziel tram depot to be built over with "climate-friendly" concrete
In the Läbe urban renewal project at the Burgereziel in Bern, Losinger Marazzi is using a concrete that binds CO2 from the atmosphere in recycled concrete granulate.

On the site of the former Burgernziel tram depot, the Läbe im Burgereziel project is currently creating 101 apartments, around 2,000 sqm of office and service space and just as much shopping and leisure space. The first residents are expected to move in by 2022.
The building owners are Gebäudeversicherung Bern (GVB) and Wohnbaugenossenschaft ACHT (wbg8). With the development, they are implementing a concept that is as sustainable and resource-saving as possible: the old hall on the site was dismantled so that parts can be reused. According to Losinger Marazzi, the new building will be constructed in accordance with the Minergie-Eco standard and is certified as a 2,000-watt site. The proportion of recycled concrete is more than half.
The building material from ETH spin-off Neustark - according to Losinger Marazzi, 600 cubic metres will be used in Bern - binds CO2 that has been filtered out of the atmosphere and liquefied in concrete granulate that comes from the deconstruction of other buildings. According to Losinger Marazzi, the Berne development is the first residential project in Switzerland and the largest real estate project to date to use Neustark material. (ah)
