Hotels: Number of overnight stays on the rise again

The Swiss hotel industry recorded a total of 11.4 million overnight stays in the first half of 2021. This is 1.4 million or 14.3% more than in the same period last year.

As the provisional results of the Federal Statistical Office (FSO) show, domestic demand in particular increased massively. It grew by 55.3% to 9.2 million overnight stays (+3.3 million). By contrast, demand from foreign guests fell by 45.4% (-1.8 million) to 2.2 million overnight stays.

Despite the marked growth, the number of overnight stays has not yet returned to the pre-Corona pandemic level. According to the FSO, the number of overnight stays in the first half of 2021 is almost 40% below the first half of 2019.

Growth in Ticino, minus in the cities

According to the FSO, ten of the 13 tourism regions recorded an increase in overnight stays in the first half of 2021 compared with the same period of the previous year. With an increase of 172.5TP2T, Ticino saw particularly strong growth. Ticino was also the only region to record an increase compared to 2019 (+27.4%).

According to the FSO, only the urban regions saw a decline in demand: Both Geneva (-30.9%), the Zurich region (-23.6%) and, to a lesser extent, the Basel region (-5.5%) suffered losses.  (ah)
