The Rosental Mitte site belongs to the canton of Basel-Stadt, which intends to develop the currently closed company site between the Badischer Bahnhof railway station and Messeplatz into a business location and integral part of the city. As the first new building on the site, the canton wants to construct a laboratory building, as its own investment in the financial assets.

According to the canton, the University of Basel and its chemistry department will be the first main tenant to occupy most of the new laboratory space for around ten years. The remaining space will be rented to companies. The project competition for the project was won by the "Petri" project from the Zurich architectural firm Karamuk Kuo Architekten and HSSP. A construction project is now to be drawn up on the basis of this. (ah)
