Bern: Major project planned on the Wifag site
The site of the former Wifag machine factory and the adjacent linen weaving mill in Berne is to be developed into a new quarter.
The landowners of the former Wifag machine factory and the linen weaving mill in the Wyler quarter would like to develop the site into a quarter in three stages. According to the City of Bern, the planning perimeter is intended for urban mixed use with a residential share of at least 80%: A new development plan should enable the construction of around 360 residential units, one third of which will be in the affordable segment.
On the ground floors of the buildings, district-related uses are prescribed, such as a bakery, hairdresser, neighbourhood restaurant, neighbourhood shop or community rooms. Other possible uses include small businesses, medical practices, architectural offices, studios and, in some cases, ancillary residential uses. The ensemble of the linen weaving mill is to be preserved as far as possible.
Public consultation on the zoning ordinance will continue until 24 September 2021, after which the city council and voters will decide on the proposal. The referendum is scheduled for summer 2023. (ah)
