Basel's Volta Nord site development is one step further
With the government's decision on the second-stage development plan, the further planning steps for the new Volta Nord district in Basel can now begin.

The Volta Nord site is intended to expand the St. Johann residential district to the north. Plans call for up to 2,500 jobs and housing for 1,500 to 2,000 people, at least one third of which will be affordable. Now that the second-stage development plan has been given the green light, planning is to go ahead. According to the canton of Basel-Stadt, there was one objection from Pro Natura and four suggestions during the public consultation. The objection has been withdrawn.
Planning for the new buildings and open spaces is currently underway, with competitions and the tendering of several building plots to non-profit housing developers. Already open are the Elys cultural and commercial building, where about three-quarters of the space has been leased, according to the canton of Basel-Stadt. The sports halls, the Elys Boulderloft and other office and club premises have already been occupied. A restaurant, among other things, will be added in the coming months. Construction of the new quarter is scheduled to start in 2024. (ah)
