Canton Basel-Stadt buys the Clara site
The canton of Basel-Stadt has acquired the Clara site in Kleinbasel. The canton justifies the purchase by saying that it secures long-term scope for housing policy in the city center.
The Clara site is 22,750 square meters in size and comprises the area between Claragraben, Sperrstrasse, Hammerstrasse and Klingentalstrasse. The site contains five residential buildings, some with office uses and a daycare center on the first floor, a public parking garage and a large green area. Three of the five residential properties will be taken over by the canton for its own management; a total of 200 apartments are distributed among the three buildings. The remaining properties on the site were built by third parties under building law, and the canton is acquiring the land here. The seller of the site is Vischer & Co.; it was owned by the family for over 150 years and for a long time was the site of a large silk ribbon weaving mill.
The sale of an entire site of this size is extremely rare and the canton is pleased to have been able to take advantage of this opportunity, the Basel government council said. The canton of Basel-Stadt did not provide any details on the purchase price. (ah)
