SBB plans market hall in Lucerne train station

SBB has found a new user for the space occupied by the Kofler fashion store in Lucerne's train station. Two entrepreneurs want to open a market hall there in the fall.

The long-established fashion house Kofler ceased operations at the beginning of 2022, and as a result a 300-square-meter retail space has also become available at Lucerne station. According to SBB, a "market hall" will open there in the fall of 2022, offering a full range of food products. The focus will be on seasonal and sustainable products from regional producers. Fruit and vegetables, as well as fish, meat and cheese, will be offered at a staffed fresh food counter, as well as specialties such as organic and natural wines.

According to SBB, the initiators of the Markhalle are Lucerne entrepreneurs Tim Holleman and Oliver Hess. Holleman has already focused on selling regional foods as part of a pop-up concept. Among other things, Hess founded an outdoor specialty store, was a federal herd protection officer and has developed a system for species-appropriate animal husbandry.

The Benu pharmacy will be present on the sales floor as an interim user until May. Then the conversion work will start, and the market hall is scheduled to open in the fall.

According to SBB, the aim is to anchor more local and regional concepts in the stations alongside established big names. The regional restaurants "La Bestia Pizza" and "Pazo Bowl" recently opened in Lucerne station, followed in April by the coffee bar "Kaffeekranz" with its first permanent location. (ah)
