The Zentrum Papiermühle site is centrally located in the Papiermühle district in the municipality of Ittigen (BE): it extends along Worblentalstrasse and connects to the intersection of Papiermühlestrasse, Grauholzstrasse and Worblentalstrasse. An S-Bahn stop is located nearby.

The development of the site has been in planning since 2014. Steiner AG and the Steiner Investment Foundation, with the involvement of the municipality of Ittigen, wanted to obtain "a convincing solution for the site in terms of urban development, architecture and function," according to Steiner.

The winner of the competition, to which five teams of planners were invited, was the project entry by E2A Piet Eckert and Wim Eckert Architekten with Studio Vulkan Landschaftsarchitektur and Schnetzer Puskas Ingenieure. According to the jury, the design is characterized by a clever urban setting that gives the site "a strong identity with exciting spatial qualities and the desired degree of publicity." It unanimously recommended the project for further development.

The architects have developed a volumetric arrangement of high-rise and long building that creates a well-proportioned, all-round square that accommodates the different prevailing elevation situations and achieves a clear address formation for commercial and residential use, according to the assessment. The filigree appearance of the high-rise combines with the delicate timber construction of the longitudinal building and leads to a harmonious relationship between the two buildings. (ah)
