Zurich: Felsenrain housing estate to be at least twice as dense

A competition for the densification of the Felsenrain senior citizens' housing estate is to be held in 2023. The 119 apartments will probably be joined by at least as many.

"The test planning has shown that at least a doubling of the building density compared to the current state is tolerable and should be aimed for," writes the city of Zurich in a media release. The housing estate was one of the first developments of the Stiftung Alterswohnungen der Stadt Zürich (SAW). In 1958, the 119 apartments that exist today were built. During the test planning for the densification, however, the city's Foundation Apartments for Large Families (SFW) was also involved as a cooperation partner, because pure old-age housing estates of this size are "no longer appropriate for the times.

According to the test planning, which began last summer, the aim is to create a mixed-generation residential development that will also include two nursing home groups run by the city's health centers for the elderly. The future vision that has been drawn up forms the basis for the architectural competition that is now due to take place. The winning project is to be selected by early 2024. The tenants are to move in at the beginning of the 2030s. (aw)
