Amazon opens data centers in the Zurich area
Amazon Web Services has launched three so-called availability zones in the Zurich area. These are clusters of data centers.
Amazon subsidiary Amazon Web Services (AWS) is one of the largest providers of cloud computing and has now expanded its offering in Switzerland. The newly opened infrastructure region AWS Europe (Zurich) Region is the seventh in Europe, along with Frankfurt, Ireland, London, Milan, Paris and Stockholm. It comprises three so-called availability zones, which in turn consist of clusters of data centers. AWS does not disclose the exact location of these zones for security reasons, but they are all in the greater Zurich area. The new Swiss AWS region makes it possible for Swiss enterprise customers to store their data domestically.
In connection with the expansion, AWS announces that it will invest a further CHF 5.9 billion in the Zurich region over the next 15 years. The money is to flow into the construction of data centers, among other things.
AWS has already been present in Switzerland for several years. In 2016, the company opened a branch in Zurich, followed by a location in Geneva in 2017. The company announced the launch of the AWS region in the Zurich area two years ago. (ah)
