The slaughterhouse site between Hohl-, Herdern-, Basler- and Hardgut-Strasse on the border between Aussersihl and Altstetten is owned by the city of Zurich. It has been used by the meat industry for over a hundred years, and the buildings on the site are almost all listed.

The leases with the three current main users expire at the end of 2029 and are not to be extended in the long term, the city council has decided. This means there will be no more slaughtering on the site from the 2030s.

The 54,600-square-meter area is to be put to a new use, with manufacturing industry taking center stage: "The Schlachthof site will remain an industrial and commercial area in the future," the Zurich City Council wrote in a media release.

The cessation of the slaughterhouse operation allows more options for a gradual development, in which the area could open up further to the neighborhood and open and green spaces could be created, the statement continues. The special architectural and urban identity of the slaughterhouse site should be preserved. (ah)
