Basel: Chilean-Swiss duo plans BIZ high-rise building
The Bank for International Settlements wants to build another high-rise building next to its headquarters in Basel. The competition for this was won by the design of the architectural firms Elemental and Nissen Wentzlaff.

The new tower is to be connected to the existing tower designed by Martin Burckhardt. The design for the new building is in conformity with the development plan approved in 2015 by the Government Council and the Grand Council of the Canton of Basel-Stadt. This allows the BIZ to realize a total gross floor area of 68,000 sqm above ground on the site, including the existing tower, which already covers around 23,000 sqm. According to Basel newspaper the new tower is to be 107 m high. If BIS decides to implement the design, a separate planning and approval process for the project will be initiated.
Participating in the competition were: Bjarke Ingels Group and Gruner AG (Denmark/Switzerland), Boltshauser Architekten (Switzerland), David Chipperfield Architects and Harry Gugger Studio (United Kingdom/Switzerland), Dominique Perrault Architecture (France), Foster+Partners and Skreinstudios (United Kingdom/Spain), Herzog & de Meuron Basel (Switzerland), HHF Architekten and Tatiana Bilbao Estudio (Switzerland/Mexico), Kengo Kuma & Associates and F.A.B.- Research and Architecture Office (Japan/Switzerland), Mecanoo International and Stähelin Partner Architects (Netherlands/Switzerland), So-Il and Karamuk Kuo Architects (USA/Switzerland).
